Gothic Nightmares: Henry Fuseli at the Tate Britain

    Gothic_nightmares

18/02/06 - I went to the Tate Britain to see the exhibition called "Gothic Nightmares".

It was OK, but I only really liked the paintings from Henri Fuseli.
Moreover, first it was incredibly busy (which was a surprise as it was Saturday afternoon, and the topic is not mainstream to me!), second the lights settings in at least 2 rooms were annoying (because of the reflection, you could not see a significant part of the paintings when facing them!)

    Description
Gothic Nightmares explores the work of Henry Fuseli (1741–1825) and William Blake (1757–1827) in the context of the Gothic – the taste for fantastic and supernatural themes which dominated British culture from around 1770 to 1830.
Featuring over 120 works by these artists and their contemporaries, the exhibition creates a vivid image of a period of cultural turmoil and daring artistic invention. The central exhibit is Henry Fuseli’s famous The Nightmare 1781.

Moderna Museet - Sotckholm January 2006

    Dick_bengtsson_6Dick Bengtsson (21 January - 30 April 2006)

Dick Bengtsson (1936-1989) was an elusive figure whose life was the subject of myth. Twenty-five years have now passed since he last had a solo exhibition at Moderna Museet.

"Welcome to Dick Bengtsson's Dark and Haunting world!"

Self71This is such an interesting exhibition which explains and shows the inspiration of Bacon in Picasso's Work.

Bacon's work is brilliant: its self-portaits, its triptychs...

Lee Miller: Portraits (National Portait Gallery)

Leemiller_1 Lee Miller (1907-77) was one of the most extraordinary photographers of the 20th century. A legendary beauty and fashion model, Miller soon became an acclaimed photographer in her own right. Her relationships with Surrealist artist Man Ray and collector Roland Penrose placed her at the heart of 20th-century artistic and literary circles and, in a career spanning more than three decades, she came into contact with an astonishing range of people. Many of these became her friends and the subjects of her penetrating portraits, which include highly perceptive and sympathetic studies of Pablo Picasso, Max Ernst, Fred Astaire, Colette and Marlene Dietrich.

Caravaggio the final years (National Gallery, London)

W4_det Caravaggio (1571 - 1610) was at the height of his fame as the most original and powerful painter of his day, when in May 1606, he killed a man in a duel. With a capital sentence on his head, he was forced to flee Rome, never to return.

During the remaining four years of his life, Caravaggio's art underwent a dramatic transformation as he moved restlessly from Naples to Malta to Sicily. He continued to use intensely observed realism and dramatic lighting to endow his paintings with a compelling sense of actuality. However, the mood of the pictures became more introspective as he probed the human condition more acutely and with greater sympathy than ever before.

This exhibition concentrates on this relatively little known period in Caravaggio's career. It brings together paintings from the remote centres in which he worked so that his profound late style can be fully appreciated for the first time. The exhibition has been organized by the National Gallery and the Soprintendenza Speciale per il Polo Museale di Napoli.

    Palermo, Palermo (Pina Bausch)

One of the most influential choreographers of our time, Pina Bausch and Tanztheater Wuppertal return to Sadler's Wells with Palermo Palermo and Nelken. Signature pieces in Bausch's extensive repertoire, the two works show her unique company of dancers, drawn from across the globe, at the height of their powers.

Pinabausch1Palermo Palermo takes its inspiration from the Sicilian city where Bausch and her company first rehearsed the work. Picking their way through the dust and debris which covers the stage, men and women come and go in a sequence of compelling encounters. In an endless search for love and intimacy, snatched moments of tenderness and resolution drive them on through the ruins of the city.

Pina_1 Bausch, Pina , 1940–, German dancer and choreographer. After training with Kurt Jooss, she studied in New York with Antony Tudor, Paul Taylor, and Paul Sanasardo. In 1973 she assumed the post of ballet master of the Wuppertal State Opera Dance Theatre. She became known for her rather bleak vision of humanity and its power struggles, her neoexpressionist approach, and her dramatic, surreal stagings; for example, in Carnations (1983) the stage was covered with thousands of silk carnations that were trampled during the performance, and in Arien (1985) the dance area was filled with ankle-deep water. Her experimental concert ballets have included productions of Kurt Weill's Seven Deadly Sins. She has also choreographed Stravinsky's Sacre du printemps (1975) and Bandoneon (1980). Bausch's later work, which tends to be mellower in tone and more romantic than her earlier dances, include Two Cigarettes in the Dark (1994), The Window Washer (1997), and Danzón (1999). From the 1990s on, Bausch's commissioned work has included pieces inspired by various places, such as Sicily in Palermo, Palermo (1991), Hong Kong in Der Fensterputzer (1997), and Portugal and Brazil in Masurca Fogo (2001).
